Concentration
Our high OPC pine bark extract is a whole herbal complex that contains all water-soluble phenolic compounds in their natural distribution as they occur in the bark of New Zealand Pinus Radiata trees.
Hence, the extract is a totally natural, unaltered, highly active mixture of these plant compounds that include many different flavonoids, stilbenes and phenolic acids. To place this concentration in perspective, two hundred milligrams of our high OPC pine bark extract (PBE) are equivalent in flavonoid content to 2.2 lbs of fresh vegetables, plus 0.88 lbs of fresh fruits (based on the “USDA database for flavonoid content in foods” counting 29 and 54 different types of fruits and vegetables, respectively).
The most abundant compounds in Pinus Radiata bark are the proanthocyanidins (also called oligomeric proanthocyanidins, OPCs, procyanidins, or condensed tannins). The proanthocyanidins are a complex group of flavonoids that consist of dimers, trimers, oligo- or polymers of catechin and epicatechin. Pinus Radiata includes the proanthocyanidin dimers B1, B3, B6, trimer C2, and other larger oligo- and polymers1,2. Our high OPC PBE contains more than 80% of proanthocyanidins by weight.
Other flavonoids and non-flavonoid phenolics present in our high OPC PBE include monomeric catechin, taxifolin (dihydroquercetin), quercetin, myricetin, stilbenes (piceatannol), and several phenolic acids.
